After decades of technological stagnation in our home energy systems, the time has finally come to embrace the future in the form of so-called ‘smart meters’. Energy companies across the country have been talking up smart meters as the next big convenience in our lives, but it’d be fair to say that their rollout has been somewhat slow.
Whilst the likes of British Gas, Ovo Energy, EDF and many more are notifying their customers and installing them at a rapid rate, others are dragging their feet ahead of the government’s 2020 deadline for universal smart meter adoption.
But what about ScottishPower? What are their plans for the rollout of smart meters? Read on and find out.
ScottishPower and smart meters
Like every energy company in the UK, ScottishPower have committed to provide free smart meters and installation for every one of their British customers. Indeed, they’ve also described the Government’s plans to make them mandatory as a “positive change”.

However, ScottishPower aren’t rolling out their smart meters just yet. Instead, customers are being asked to register their interest for a rollout in the near future. That’s a disappointment for ScottishPower customers who have friends with other energy suppliers enjoying their new smart meters.
At present, all customers can do is register their interest at ScottishEnergy’s smart meter page. The company will then write to you when they’re scheduling installations in your area.
Why would you want a smart meter?
All of this might have you wondering why you’d want a smart meter in the first place, so what are the advantages of a smart meter equipped life?
– Being able to see how much energy you’re using at any time. Imagine being able to see how much your energy usage is costing you at any given moment.
– Never having to send a meter reading again thanks to a direct connection between your energy usage, the smart meter and your energy company.
– Never receiving an estimated bill again.
– Keeping your home green by lowering your energy use.
If all that’s got you excited about the prospect of smart meters, don’t fret. ScottishPower have finalised their smart meter design and should be ready to roll out installations to their UK customers very shortly.
In the meantime, you can read their FAQ page to learn more about smart meters and Scottish Power’s plans.
