Scottish Power was founded in 1990 in preparation of the privatisation of the-then state owned Scottish electricity industry. Formed from the merger of the South of Scotland Electricity Board and the North of Scotland Hydro Board, ScottishPower later acquired MANWEB in 1995 before diversifying into the water supply business with the purchase of Southern Water.
More mergers came before a takeover bid from Iberdrola was accepted for £11.6 billion and approved by shareholders at an EGM on the 30th of March, 2007.
Today, ScottishPower supply around 5 million customers and businesses with energy, making them a member of the Big Six energy companies.
