Services and Businesses
Scottish Power is largely known for supplying gas and electricity to domestic and commercial properties in the UK, as well as providing additional services such as boiler cover and repairs. It offers fixed and variable rate monthly energy tariffs, prepayment meters, and the Power Up app, which allows customers to purchase energy bundles via a smartphone. Bundles range between one day and six months; the bigger the bundle, the cheaper the energy.
The company has also developed the Scottish Power Connect app, which allows customers to control their heating and hot water remotely from a smartphone.
Scottish Power generates its own energy via its power stations. It currently owns four gas power stations, two hydroelectric plants and two wind farms, one of which is the UK’s largest onshore wind farm. Scottish Power is the UK’s largest producer of wind energy.
Scottish Power is also the distribution network operator for central and southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire.
Company History
Scottish Power was originally established in 1901 as the Clyde Valley Electrical Company. Based in Glasgow, it was one of the first electrical companies in the UK. In 1950 it was merged into the South of Scotland Electricity Board.
In readiness for the privatisation of Scotland’s electricity industry, Scottish Power was created from the South of Scotland Electricity Board in 1990. It benefited greatly from the introduction of competition into the domestic energy supply market, and gained a great deal of business that previously belonged to monopoly-holder British Gas.
Following its purchase of the regional electricity company Manweb in 1995, it also gained the distribution licence for North Wales, Merseyside and Cheshire, in addition to the one it already held for central and southern Scotland. This created a lot of new business for the company south of the border.
In 2006, Scottish Power was taken over by the Spanish energy firm Iberdrola in a deal worth £11.6 billion. Iberdrola was already well-established in the field of renewable energy, and Scottish Power quickly followed suit, investing heavily in wind power.
The company has suffered a great deal of criticism in recent years for its poor customer service and misleading sales techniques. Since 2013 it has been fined over £27 million in total by Ofgem, the regulatory body for the UK energy supply industry. The fines were for three separate misdemeanours.
Scottish Power has reported a pre-tax profit of £924.9 million for the first three-quarters of 2016, a slight fall on the same period in 2015.
Community and Charity Work
Scottish Power is committed to helping customers reduce energy bills by informing them about ways to use energy responsibly. The company supports the charity Cancer Research UK, for which it has raised over £10 million through employees’ fundraising activities and the introduction of a special energy tariff which donates money to the charity.
Why choose Scottish Power?
That’s a great question. Scottish Power hasn’t got the finest reputation in the energy market – do any of the big six? – however it is a customer-focused company which is investing heavily in eco-friendly products and ways to reduce its and its customer’s carbon footprints. Scottish Power is also leading the way with regard to the latest energy efficiency technologies which includes smart meters, which are a smarter way to monitor home and business energy usage. Above all else, they are a stable and reliable energy supplier.
