My British Gas pay-as-you-go card is lost or stolen, what should I do?

There are instances when your British Gas pay-as-you-go card may become lost or stolen. And if so, it’s important to take action as soon as possible.

My British Gas prepayment card has been stolen

If your gas card has been stolen, it is possible to obtain a new card at the PayPoint that is closest to you. All you have to do is inform the worker at the PayPoint that your card has been stolen. In order to put more credit on the new card, it must first be activated. This means that the card must be put into a meter for a full minute.

It is also possible to call and inform British Gas that your card has been stolen and a new one can be sent to you within 3 business days. This can be done by calling 0800 048 0303 or 0843 770 5045.

Those that had money already on the card when it was stolen, can have these funds refunded. This is done by just calling the number and informing the agent on the phone that your card was stolen. This will result in the agent verifying information and then refund your meter that amount that will be credited to you. This all depends on the amount that was existing on your card at the time that it was stolen. I a large amount was on the card, it might be possible to have a receipt sent to you that can be used  when you report the crime.

It is also possible for customers that normally top their cards off online to get a new card quickly. This is done by calling British Gas during normal business hours between Friday 8am and Saturday 8am to 6pm.

Losing your prepayment card is not the end of the world.

If your card was lost, but you generally top it off at a PayPoint, you can go to the nearest shop. You simply inform the worker within the shop that your card has been lost and you wish to have it replaced. In order for money to be credited to the card, it will first need to be activated by being placed within your meter for a full minute. Those that can’t go to a PayPoint location can have a new card sent directly to them, but this will take 3 business days.
