EDF Energy history

EDF Energy was founded in 2003 with headquarters in London, UK. It was founded by the French state-owned EDF SA following the acquisition of SEEBOARD Plc.

Initially, EDF Energy was a supplier of energy to domestic and business users. However, following the takeover of British Energy in 2009, along with its assets which included a nuclear generator, EDF Energy became one of the UK’s largest generators of energy as well as the largest distribution network operator.

Although EDF Energy came into being in 2003, the company was being built up four years prior to this through small and large acquisitions and mergers. Below, we have listed the most important acquisitions and mergers since 1999, which helped EDF Energy come to be:

EDF’s merger and acquisition history

  • Merged with London Electricity
  • Merged with SWEB supply business

2000

  • Acquired Cottam power station

2001

2002

  • Merged with SEEBoard

2003

  • EDF Energy came into being.

EDF Energy ownership

EDF Energy is wholly owned by EDF. EDF is one of the world’s largest energy groups. Surprisingly, EDF is not on the London Stock Exchange, however this may be an option for them in the future.

EDF Energy operations

EDF currently powers 20% of the United Kingdom, as demonstrated by the pie chart above. The company employs roughly 15,000 people across the United Kingdom. These people are located all over the UK and EDF Energy is known as one of the best energy suppliers to work for.

Despite the energy domestic and business users consume being EDF’s primary business model, it isn’t their only one. EDF Energy energy has two businesses – one that produces electricity, and one that buys gas and electricity. This is called their customer supply business. It is the generation business which operates the power stations owned by EDF.
