Co-op Energy Latest News, February 2017

Co-op energy are one of the most trusted energy companies in the UK, thanks to their promise to never take profits for themselves, and to instead put them into valuable community projects or improving their service. As such, a great many people have moved to Co-op over the last few years.

Whilst that’s certainly a good thing, the Co-op don’t make it particularly easy to find out the latest news surrounding the company. Of course, you could spend your day trawling the internet, or you could join us here as we run down all the latest news from the UK energy supplier.

David Bird appointed Co-operative Energy CEO

Changes at the top for Co-op Energy has been appointed the new CEO, joining from EON where he was managing director of their UK residential and metering business before he took the Co-op Energy position.

The business has been through a period of rapid growth over the last year and now boasts over 400,000 customersand the board of Midcounties appointed Mr Bird “following a comprehensive process to strengthen the management of Co-operative Energy” in such a regulated market. He will be reporting to Ben Reid, group chief executive of Midcounties.

In a statement, Mr Reid said: “Co-operative Energy has seen outstanding growth over the past couple of years, it is clear we need to strengthen our team and increase our capacity for further growth. We are therefore very pleased to have been able to attract such a high calibre industry expert such as David Bird to this new post.”

Mr Bird’s previous experience was at National Express, where he was group customer service director and at Vodafone, Homebase, BUPA and Marks & Spencer, where his career begun. He said “I’m delighted to be joining Co-operative Energy and the Midcounties Co-operative on the next stage of its journey to support members, customers and the communities that the society serves,”

Co-op Chosen to Take Over GB Energy Customers

GB Energy’s collapse came almost out of nowhere, leaving 160,000 customers in the lurch as uncertainty ruled.

Now, we know that a deal has been struck between the energy regulator Ofgem and Co-p Energy to transfer those customers over to the latter’s business. Co-p Energy were announced following a brief but “competitive process run to get the best deal possible”.

Co-p Energy will honour all outstanding credit balances for current customers and for past customers who are still owed money. It’s also offering GB Energy customers the same deals they were on at GB Energy.

Rachel Fletcher, Ofgem’s senior partner for consumers and competition, said: “We are very pleased to have been able to secure a deal with Co-operative Energy, where GB Energy Supply customers will be paying the same price for their energy as they were before. Their credit balances will also be honoured.”

Customers will automatically be transferred over to Co-op Energy and will receive notice shortly thereafter.
